Safe to spend

The one number that tells you what you can spend today

Your bank balance lies. Safe to spend does not. It reserves money for bills and savings first, then shows the daily amount left for discretionary spending — so you never panic mid-month.

Why your bank balance is not enough

Checking $1,350 on a Tuesday feels fine — until rent auto-pays on Thursday and you realize $650 was never yours to spend. Safe to spend accounts for money already spoken for before you decide on dinner.

The formula

(Income − Spent − Unpaid bills − Savings or 5% buffer) ÷ Days left

  1. 1

    Income this cycle

Paychecks, side income, and refunds for your current budget period.

  2. 2

    Minus what you've spent

Everything logged so far — groceries, transport, coffee, all of it.

  3. 3

    Minus unpaid bills

Rent, utilities, subscriptions, and loan payments still due this cycle.

  4. 4

    Minus savings or buffer

Your savings target, or a 5% emergency buffer if you have no goal set.

  5. 5

    Divide by days left

The result is your safe-to-spend number for today.

Example

Biweekly cycle, 10 days left: $2,800 income − $1,450 spent − $650 unpaid bills − $200 savings = $500 remaining. Divided by 10 days = $50 safe to spend per day.

Your safe-to-spend calculator

Spreadsheets and online calculators need you to re-enter numbers every day. Monthmate is the calculator — it recalculates automatically when you log spending, mark a bill paid, or change your savings target. No copy-paste, no stale numbers.

How Monthmate calculates it

Monthmate updates your safe-to-spend number every time you log spending, mark a bill paid, or adjust your savings target. Everything runs on your device — offline, no bank connection required.

Safe to spend vs zero-based budgeting

A zero based budget app assigns every dollar to categories. A safe to spend app reserves bills and savings first, then gives one daily number for discretionary spending. Same discipline for obligations — less category homework for daily decisions.
